What is Life Insurance?

Life insurance typically pays out a tax-free lump sum in the event of the policyholder dying. This is typically set up on a decreasing term policy, to cover a mortgage, or on a level term policy, to guarantee a certain level of payout.

Supporting you when you need it most

Death is far from easy to talk about, but fortunately, we are here to have these difficult conversations to ensure you and your loved ones are protected. At Quanstrom Financial, we use our large range of insurers and expertise to recommend a policy that is bespoke to you.

Get in touch if you wanted to discuss your life insurance options. Whatever your budget, we will always aim to set up bespoke cover tailored to your needs.

We do not charge a fee for life insurance advice. Life Insurance plans have no cash in value at any time and will cease at the end of the term.  If premiums are not maintained, then cover will lapse.

Which type of life insurance is right for you?

Life insurance is not one single product, and the right type depends on what you want it to protect. A mortgage broker at Quanstrom Financial will recommend the type, amount and length of cover to suit your circumstances and budget.

Decreasing term

Designed to protect a repayment mortgage. The amount of cover reduces over time, broadly in line with your outstanding mortgage balance, which typically makes it the most affordable way to protect your home loan.

Level term

The amount of cover stays the same for the whole term, so your loved ones would receive the same lump sum whether a claim happens in year one or the final year. Often used alongside an interest only mortgage, or to leave a set amount for your family.

Family income benefit

Instead of a single lump sum, this pays your family a regular monthly income for the rest of the term, replacing the salary that has been lost. It can make budgeting simpler at the hardest possible time.

Do life insurance policies actually pay out?

The idea that insurers look for reasons not to pay is one of the biggest myths in protection. Aviva's own claims data for 2025 shows the reality:

98.7%

of life and terminal illness claims paid (Source: Aviva claims data, 2025)

40,277

individual protection claims paid in one year (Source: Aviva claims data, 2025)

£860.7m

paid out to families and loved ones (Source: Aviva claims data, 2025)

Frequently asked questions

Do I need life insurance to get a mortgage?

No, life insurance is not a legal requirement and lenders do not generally insist on it, although buildings insurance is required. Quanstrom Financial strongly recommends life cover to anyone whose family depends on their income, because a mortgage becomes a debt of your estate if the worst happens.

What is the difference between level and decreasing term cover?

Decreasing term cover reduces over time, broadly in line with a repayment mortgage balance, which usually makes it the most affordable option. Level term cover stays the same for the whole term, so the payout is identical whenever a claim is made.

How much life insurance cover do I need?

A common starting point is enough to clear your mortgage, and many families also add cover to replace income for day to day living costs. The right figure depends on your borrowing, your dependants and any cover you already have, which is exactly what your adviser will work through with you.

How much does life insurance cost?

Premiums depend on your age, health, smoking status, the amount of cover and the length of the term, so there is no single answer. Whatever your budget, we will always aim to set up cover tailored to your needs.

Do life insurance policies actually pay out?

Far more often than most people expect. Aviva's 2025 claims data shows 98.7% of life and terminal illness claims were paid, totalling over £860 million to families in a single year.

What does writing life insurance in trust mean?

Placing a policy in trust is an arrangement that can help the payout reach the right people more quickly and directly. Whether it suits your policy depends on your circumstances, and your adviser can talk you through it when your cover is set up.
